    mouse dead "ps2 and usb"

just formatted a hard drive and reinstalled windows XP2, prior to the install i could not get the mouse to work consistanly (either a ps2 or usb). After the fresh install, i cannot get a mouse to be recognized by windows with usb or a ps2 mouse. Previously after a few reboots it would always catch and start working. Anyone have any ideas on what to try to get a mouse working again???

    please and thanks

Do any usb device work when plugged in?
Plugging/unplugging in a PS2 mouse while the pc is runnng has been know to short out the mobo.

the mice work fine in other machine no problem, and i have no problems with other usb devices, all was fine before the format, now nothing works, i have even tried a serial port

i am kinda at a loss here, have started in safe mode etc, tried a different keyboard, and nothing seems to work

Did you check the BIOS to verify that USB is enabled?

Have you checked in the BIOS to verify that the mouse and keyboard are enabled?

You may have a dead mobo.

all is fine in the bios, i did check that, just seems strange that everything else works but this **** mouse..........all was fine before the format, just would seem strange that the mobo all of the sudden died for the mouse only

?? how about a reinstall with the keyboard and mouse hooked up th the 2 serial ports, is that worth a try?? (will try them before a reinstall of course, but i amreinstalling windows again as we speak/write)

thanks so far for the help folks

prior to the install i could not get the mouse to work consistanly
    and
Previously after a few reboots it would always catch and start working.

It sounds like you were having issues Before the install....

yes before the install, it would seem the mouse would freeze on boot-up, but if you rebooted a few times it would eventually work.........now nothing

Not really. There is no such thing as a serial keyboard (as far as I know). I stopped using serial mice well over 15 years ago when PS/2 took over.

Many systems have trouble booting with only USB mice and keyboards installed. We keep a PS/2 keyboard in a cabinet for the problem systems.

I think you have a lot more problems than you realize. I suspect the mobo is to blame.
