Define "crappy". Have you tried turning down your graphics quality?

maybe you should get a X1950XT then are you still on AGP or PCI-E x16?

X1950XT = ATI
5900XT = nVidia

your currently useing a 6800XT which is slower then the Geforce 7's and ATI X1900XT's+ are faster then geforce 7's
so if you wanna run games with everything turned to max you definately need a better gfx card if your getting low frame rates. If your running 1600x1200 and over it might be wise to get an X1950XTX instead because it comes with 512mb onboard memory
or you could get one of these while the prices are that low
http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?t=194473
those retail for over $500 and even blow away the X1950XTX's that are like $400

Well, you don't have an "extreme PC". You would need SLI for that.
Turn it down more.

Argh! My bad.
So describe what's happening please. A PC with a P3 and a GeForce GT should be able to handle a game at that setting.

I went through EQ2's tech forums for a bit. From what it looks like, lag is generally inherent depending on what area you're in, or if you have a large group...raid, in that area. The various suggestions to the game settings are
turn down your particle effects
turn off overhead names
turn off chat bubbles
turn off all AV
set up your firewall to allow open port ranges they list in support forums.
defrag your hard drive frequently
On the hardware side, I can see you gaining from bumping up to 2 gig of ram ($100.00 for a gig), and upgrading to a 7800GS / X1950XT series card ($235-ish). Your processor isn't much of a factor.
-
if I run the game in the extreme performance mode, it only runs ar like 30fps, so if i bump it up at all it drops to 20fps out of battle, and 10fps in battle, or lower...I would think i should be getting better than that...I think shoreguy is probly right..video or ram
-
should I add more PC3200 ram, or change to a higher frequency?

you won't gain with more than the 3200 tacked on. you're actually at a 'break-point' with ram v. video in your setup for eq2. both will provide an overall boost, as I've read that folks pushing up to 2gb see as much improvement as the vc bump. any way you could ask for the vc, and exchange all the other stuff you get for Christmas for the ram as well? Suggestions: 'it doesn't fit', 'i hate the color', 'I already have a wallet', 'my class next semester requires me to have 2gb ram', 'i'll eat all the leftover fruitcake if i can get the ram as well', '1gb of ram makes baby Jesus cry.' ?
