    Win 98/XP file sharing

I recently built a new computer to replace my old one. I was going to connect both of them and transfer some files to the new computer. The old computer is running Win 98 and the new one has Win XP. An associate at FRY's told me XP wouldn't file share with Win98.Is this true? If so, what are my options ?

    No it's not true.

The trick is to set the default logon to "Client for Microsoft Networks" in Win98 and log on using the same username and password as XP.

You must enable File and Print Sharing in Win98 and you have to use the same Workgroup name as XP.

Finally, you have to share a folder/drive on each PC so that you can connect from the opposite PC.

true - provided he's got burner software, a decent burner, etc.

But I usually grab the HDD and throw it in the new machine as a slave (be sure and check your jumpers) - easier to get access, extra storage, and when you're done you can do the factory diagnostics, reformat the entire drive and use it backup the master (or your most important files)

with NTFS it can be tough to recover files if XP fails you, which unfortunately has happened to me more than once........

I've had 8 machines on a network, sharing files just fine. 5 were XP, 2 were ME and 1 was 98. As long as they all had file sharing enabled and were in the same domain, no one had a bit of trouble moving files from one machine to another.
