    Exclamation Mein Computer Problems!!

I have a Diamond MONSTER SOUND MX300 (PCI) that will not recognize after a warm boot. Any suggestions on what might be the problem would be greatly appreciated.

    ---------------------------------------------

    Basic System

    Abit BX6 R2
Pentium II 450 MHz. (not over clocked)
    128 Megs of PC100 RAM
    Seagate 6.5 gigabyte hard drive
    CL Banshee AGP card
    Diamond Monster Sound MX-300
    48x DELTA CD-ROM

I did have installed but removed units and all associated files - LS-120 and CD-RW
    ---------------------------------------------

    Software

Windows 98 (not SE 2 but with all available updates)
    Norton Antivirus 2000
    ---------------------------------------------

    BIOS INFORMATION

    AWARD BIOS v4.51G (2A69KA1K)

In the BIOS under: PNP/PCI CONFIGURATION

    PNP OS INSTALLED: NO
    Force update ESCD: Disabled
    Resources controlled by: Auto

    Assign IRQ for VGA: Enabled
    Assign IRQ for USB: Enabled

    PIRQ_1 use IRQ No.: AUTO
    PIRQ_2 use IRQ No.: AUTO
    PIRQ_3 use IRQ No.: AUTO
    PIRQ_4 use IRQ No.: AUTO
    ---------------------------------------------

During BOOT - PCI DEVICE LISTING

    IDE Control - IRQ 14
    ISA Control - IRQ 10
Multimedia - IRQ 10 (only during a cold boot)
    Display Control - IRQ 11

    NOTES.
    1. This system ran perfectly fine with a PNP ISA SoundBlaster audio card.
    2. Windows doesn’t list any hardware or IRQ conflicts.
    3. The PNP OS INSTALLED set to NO is the MOB’s preferred setting.
    4. I have had other problems with PCI cards not recognizing during a warm/reboot of this system. Chiefly a Creative Labs DX2 DVD Decoder Card.
    5. Yes, I’ve jumpered the CMOS and reset the BIOS.

    Regards to All,

    Zotz Mein

I would recommend to all those new to this forum, to use this as a template as to the level of information needed in order to properly diagnose a problem. The main thing I see with a lot of new member’s posts is they tend to give to little information. This maybe overkill but I think the regular gurus (I’m not one – obviously) of this forum will agree that too much information is better than to little.

    Zotz Mein two cents.

Have you tried to change the PnP OS to yes?

"that will not recognize after a warm boot"
Do you mean that a cold boot up works?

Zots..... give this a try (had similar issues with ABIT boards, and this worked).

Pay attention to the PCI slot you have your sound card mounted in. I can't remember where I read it (probably an ABIT manual somewhere), but if the PCI slot your sound card is in is the one that is shared, then the IRQ assignment/sharing messes up.

Move it to different slot, change your bios to:

    PNP OS INSTALLED: No
    Force update ESCD: Enabled
    Resources controlled by: Auto

The PNP OS setting will work either way (yes or no), the Force update ESCD setting of enabled will recommunicate to the Win98 OS what is in your system and where. Once Win98 successfully boots and reads the bios info, it automatically gets set back to disabled. Leave resources controlled by auto.

Again, not sure it it will work for you, but it did for me.

Good luck, and let us know how it turns out. ~Target

Another thing you might check out is to see if ABIT has a newer driver for the mobo PCI bus.

Did you check the system stack in the device manager screen to see if your PCI bus showed any conflicts or errors? Might be there.
