    Help with hard drive

I recently found a decent old computer for my sister and her fiance to use until they can buy a new one. It apparently has a 40GB hard drive, according to the label on it and what I read in its information in my BIOS, but when I look at its capacity in its properties, it's only 26GB.
Could anyone tell me why this would me?

It may not be fully partitioned . Use the hard drive manuf.'s diagnostic to check and test the drive . I would zero write the drive also before installing a new OS on it .

Or maybe someone changed the drive and put a 30GB dive in it instead.

    Go to Run> and type:

    diskmgmt.msc

See is there is any unallocated space available. The previous owner may have installed the OS and not realised to format the remaining unallocated HDD space.

Or the BIOS may be limited to a 30GB max. drive size.
