    MDLarson or others

    My son is going to get a MacBook mainly because it goes with his ipod and they are the "in" thing at Uni. It's his money so what can you do; I feel they are a bit on the expensive side but they look pretty good. Is the 2 GHz processor worth getting and how much RAM does the MAC OS need?

    OS X has about the same memory requirements as XP - 512MB or more for best performance and more for heavy graphics.

    Just be sure that it's an Intel Core Duo processor MacBook. The older version is already obsolete.

    Well he picked one up today. It is a slick little puppy. I only used it for a few minutes to set up wireless ap on it for him. I like the look and feel of OS Tiger although I only used it for a short time.

    He's working 40 hours a week for the summer in a factory. He's earned the money. He sold his old laptop to another student working there; so he's real happy.

    p.s. Get yourself one BpB; what the heck.

    Heh, I check in here eeevery so often now-a-days (playing NWN in my spare time), so I was surprised to see this thread title. (sorry for the delay!)

    Anyway, I echo the sentiments already expressed by BipolarBill - I view 512 MB RAM as a good starting point for Mac OS X; the more the better as usual. I also tentatively agree that the PowerPC Macs will be eclipsed by the power of the Intel versions if only for the simple reason that the Intel Macs can run Windows now too (both in boot mode or virtualization with Parallels software).

    Exciting times for Apple, without a doubt. Enjoy the MacBook.

    By the way, if someone wants to get a hold of me the best way is to send me a PM. I check my email more than I scour the SysOpt forums looking for Mac vs. PC debates.

    MDLarson;

    Glad to see you responded. He went with 512 as he feels he doesn't really need more for what he does. He bought the Intel core duo 13" white MacBook. Nice little laptop; the remote that came with it is intuitive and the built in camera is slick. Matches his i-pod perfectly. Had a little trouble with it saying it was connected to the network (wireless) and actually connecting to my router but not allowing any internet access. Got it straightened out.
