ie 5.01 help meeeeee

Like a dummy, I downloaded ie 5.01 and am having all kinds of trouble. I hope my computer doesn't crash before I get this post on the board. After it loaded, I came back and there were two messages that two files could not load , offline brower and something else. I tried to click on the details and my computer locked up. Now, when I restart, I get about a dozen error messages and can hardly browse the internet for all the illegal function errors. I called microripoff, I mean microsoft and sat on hold for an hour (my cost) no 800 number for this. I cant go to their site to try to find help because every time I do, it wants to update ie 5.0. When I try to do this, I get a message to the effect that "you have already done this" and it stops. If anyone knows of the site where I can uninstall 5.01 please post the site. Also, If I ever download the newest thing that Microsoft has, everybody please slap me.......

Here is a Microsoft KB article on how to remove IE 5.01, I hope you are able to get there. Remove IE 5.01

You may want to try the repair function first under controll panel/add remove.
Make like you want to remove it and it will give you an option to repair it.

(edit) While were on the subject, does anyone know what improvements this version has?
howcome when I look under help/about IE, I see it listed as ver 5.00.2919.6307 ?

my advice to you is to go to www.microsoft.com/ie and download and install IE 4.01 SP2 - That's what I had the most success with to date. While you're in that area of the net - I'd also get the win95 Y2K service pack and the security updates just for grins.

IE5 has too many bells and whistles on it and takes too long to download & install - 19,000+ kb takes over an hour on my network connection - then, you could just order the CD and wait, but I'm waiting for the first SP to come out for it, then I'll order the CD and play with it some more.

Thanks Dave_H. I followed the instructions and it fixed most of my problems. Scared me though. It removed Outlook Express. I just reinstalled it and it brought my email and address book back just like before. Only problem now is: I am still getting a "Tapisrv" Illegal function during dialup. Anyone know what that is???

scfarley,
Glad to hear you got most of it solved.
as for the problem with "tapisrv", its part of DUN (dial-up networking). If your using windows 98, you may want to try your system file checker and see if it finds a problem with a DUN file. If using windows 95, there is an inproved DUN you can download. It's been a while, I can't remember the version of it.(1.3?)

Hopefully, someone else here that knows more about this than me will be able to assist you.

If anyone is interested in learning more about what is "new" about IE 5.01, I finally found some stuff about it. Check this thread from another forum.

No Wonder Site

There is a letter posted by a user
"GoldenScrewDriver" that explains about the new version. Basicly, it states not much is new at all.

Not sure if it will help or not, but deja.com has a lot of posts about error messages.

I don't know what modem you have etc, so I'd check here for starters.re: Tapisrv

"IE5(or other ver) may be trying to use dial-up networking which will use TAPI. TAPISRV may crash because a bad TSP is installed"

Good luck in all,

If you ever get this off your system, send off for CD IE 5 and internet tools. It's free
except for shipping $5.95. When I got Office
97, I sent off for the SR 2 update on CD also, so if I need to re-install, I wouldn't have to download . I've downloaded and ,I
guess, sometimes you don't get it all and the you've got problems.Best of luck.

P.S. Just checked Windows Update , IE 5
uninstall.... What a mess. Need to go there
and find out for yourself
