    Upgrading to an LCD monitor

Currently I have the ViewSonic PF790. I am looking at upgrading to a flat panel monitor in the next 30 days. It will be used for gaming and I was trying to budget less than $1000. Any recommendations on manufacturers and models. I saw this Gateway FPD2185W 21" LCD Flat-Panel in Best Buy last week and I like the extra features like USB ports though I am wary of the Gateway brand name.

I can't provide specific make and model - but pay particular attention to the refresh rate and get the lowest you can find within your budget. A couple years ago 16 ms was good. You can find them today nearly 10x faster.

Thank you for the link. Is 8ms a good response time for high end gaming?

it's very subjective. 8ms should be good in general, but you should really take a look at a demo monitor first. Some people are more sensitive than others.

also, remember that CRT and LCD measurements are different. the CRT 21" would be more like a 19-20" LCD, as far as viewable area. even a 19" LCD would be bigger than what you have now.

NEC 1970GX-BK is an awsome monitor for gaming if you have the money to fish out for it...

The gateway you referenced is in the latest 'roundup', and it's hdcp-compliant, if you're thinking of going windows vista...

keep in mind the resolution that is native to the LCD.... if it says "native res 1600x1200" then you'll pretty much HAVE to do all your gaming at that res!

I had a NEC 1770NX and then upgraded to a NEC 2080UX+, but the native res went up from 1280x1024 to 1600x1200 and my old XP3000+ and Radeon 9700pro couldn't cope at high detail, with the latest games at that resolution!

Untrue about *having* to do all of your gaming at the native resolution. For text and general Windows use, stick with the native res. Otherwise, there are plenty of LCD's out there that are very good at displaying, say, 1280x1024 or 1024x768 for gaming.

I got a Samsung syncmaster 214T....21 inch LCD. It very nice and has a contrast ratio of 900:1 and refresh of 8ms I believe. Newegg was the place and at the time it was $739. I believe that contrast ratio is important.....don't know why really cause I don't understand it totally. Maybe someone can shed some light on that topic without drifting to far off the topic IYKWIM.
