Floppy Drive not displayed in My Computer

I have a Dell Dimension XPS 533MHz PC upgraded to 1.4GHz. I was forced to do a clean install after a video editing program crashed the hard drive. After completing the new install of Windows 2000, I noticed that my floppy drive (A:\) is not showing up in My Computer. It's seen in CMOS and is even checked at bootup but doesn't work in Windows. The floppy controller is seen in Device Manager but not the drive.

I've verified the drive is working and cables are good. It was working before the crash and even afterwards when I loaded the drivers for the new ATA 133 hard drive controller card I installed. Any suggestions?

First, try rescanning for it. Right-click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management > Action > Rescan Disks.

    This might help

Delete all of the floppy items in device manager then reboot. It should redetect it and install.

    No go Sterling_Aug.

Ol'Tunzafun, this KB article referred to XP only. Do you know if these Registry keys are the same in 2000?

    Thanks,

Ok, replace the cables and try it. The drive itself may be damaged.

If you need to replace it, I would upgrade to an external USB floppy drive. It would be useful on other machines then.

Those registry keys are virtually the same in W2K, XP Home and XP Pro. The only difference is the indicated location of the Troubleshooter file in that Class key and that is not part of the suggested change.
    Two questions:
1 - Do you have any Upper or Lower filters listed under that class key mentioned in KB812489?
2 - Is the path in the Flpydisk key the same as that indicated in KB817196?

    In response to your questions:

    1. No

    2. Yes

If that is the case, then these two registry hacks will not help.

Is the floppy enabled in the BIOS?

Yes, that was one of the first places I looked at.

In Device Manager do you have the catagory "Floppy disk drives" under "Floppy disk controllers" ?

In XP, the generic floppy drivers are in C:\WINDOWS\System32\DRIVERS\flpydisk.sys

Do you have such a file?
