    Maxtor vs. WD vs. Seagate

    Okay... i'm biased

Maxtor never failed me, i've had several bad HDD with Western Digital, and Seagate

but now i'm facing a Upgrade dilema which one to choose WD or Seagate

are the any known issues with WD or Seagates hard drives now in days, that i should be aware of?

Problem running out of HDD space on my (4x) 300 GB Maxtors
Planned upgrad of (4x) 400 GB HDD WD/Seagate

my worries... mentioned above, i've had problems several times with WD drives and Seagate drives, so i'm no so sure if i should upgrade or wait.

Maxtor doesn't yet have 400 GB HDD as far as i can find online/locally for sale.

maybe i should just wait for even Larger HDD to come out, or wait for Maxtor to have their 400 GB HDD available

I've had many smaller WD's and I have never had any broken ones but I am not elligible to vote on your poll because I haven't tried any maxtors or seagates.

I wouldn't buy a Maxtor drive if you payed for it and gave it as a present to me.

WD are the best, bar none!

You aren't really gaining much bumping up from 4x300 to 4x400GB.

I would go RAID5 SATA and got 5x500GB with the RAID5 for protection (4x500GB useful).

Percentage-wise, I've lost more Maxtor drives than any other. Although more WD drives have bombed on me than any other, I've bought far more of them than any other.

In short, all drives are prone to breaking. You pays yer money and takes yer chances.

So no Hitachi takers? they have 500s.

It's luck of the draw. I've had a lot of dead seagates, maxtors, WDs, samsungs, fujitsus, IBM/hitachi, and toshiba drives. It's not IF a drive will go bad, it's WHEN.

that's quite true... with all the electronics items we depend on so much now in days

in the office we got a new server (Dell), it's been only a week, and it died (some Mobo problem)

the exact same model server we had over 6 months ago is still live and kicking...

You are right on that one, that's why i've not really jump in to the stores yet.

I'm hoping the 500+ GB will become available in the next few weeks/couple of months maybe?

Just another $0.02 worth of advise.

Toshiba hard drives = BAD. I have had as many Toshibas go belly up as I have Maxtors.

Or, how about adding a moble rack or 2. Kingwin is also making them for Sata drives now. Or do you need access to all that data at the same time?

I use a rack for Multi OS w/o having to dual boot. Have 2 frames in drive bays and xtra trays for different drives. Works well other than having to reboot to make a change in drives.
