    Home DVD - Audio Question

I make several Home Videos into DVD. I have old movies that were originally recorded as AVI. I take these AVI videos and convert them to MPG format using TMPGEnc Plus. Once they are MPG files I use either Pinacle Studio 9 or TMPGEnc DVD Author to Make DVD format files.

When I play the DVD's (before or after burning) on any computer (PC or Mac) they work fine. When I play the DVD's (after burning) on my home DVD player they work. I do not know the brand at the moment as I am 3 states away from home.

I brought several of my home movies to my relatives homes over the holidays. Some of the DVD players do not play the audio. Video seems to work fine in all the players.

I was wondering if anyone knows why. I am encoding the audio as Linear PCM. If I encode the audio as MPEG 2 will that solve the issue? My home player does work if I use either MP2 or PCM.

I never knew there was a problem until I tried playing the home made DVD's away from home. Again it is only the audio that does not work. One setup uses an optical connection to a surround processor like my home setup. The other players all use Component Video/Audio connections.

If more information is needed please let me know.

Not all home DVD players are created equal.

Try recording in AC3; pretty well all players recognize that.

I was thinking about purchasing an AC3 add on for TMPGEnc. I have not looked but does Pinnacle Studio 9 (not the basic package) support AC3? I thought I would need to buy the encoder for any software I want to use it on.

I don't know about Pinnacle. But Toast should be able to do it for you.

The way I do it is with Nero Vision.

You can load any type of video files and it will encode to PAL or NTSC. Obviously you want NTSC in the United States. You can also have it set to do Dolby Digital AC3 5.1 or 2.0 audio. They come out awesome (video and audio) and will play in any DVD player sold in region 1.

Nero does all the converting of the video and audio format's during encoding, and automatically adjust's the bitrate to get it to fit on a 4.7GB DVD-R if the original files are larger than 4.7GB.
