DCOM Error - Event ID 10005
I just performed a clean install of XP home with no problems, shuts down and boots ok. After installing SP2 and security updates, the systems hangs at the Windows Logo during boot up. No AV or spyware installed during the updating process. Loaded and scanned with AVG, SPYbot, Ad-aware & Pest Patrol no bugs.
Now, cleared event viewer and booted. Hangs at Logo, did a hot boot and it opens into safe mode options menu. Sometimes it will continue booting without at hitch with 'Start Normally", sometimes not. If not I open in SM.
Here is the error message in the error message in the event log:
Source; DCOM Event ID: 10005
DCOM Got Error: This service cannot be started in Safe Mode attempting to start the Service Event System with arguments in order to run the server:
I have cleared the event log a number of times and this is the only error message that is logged from the hang.
I have had no luck Googling for an answer, so any help would be appreciated. I did set restore points as I upgraded, I guess I could just step back to a clean boot.
Since you can only get into Safe Mode, get used to seeing that event. It's not the cause of your problem - it's an effect.

Thanks Bill, I will give it a shot.
DCOM error resolution:
The Protected Storage service registry key is missing from the registry.
NOTE: Before proceeding with the workaround, verify that the Protected Storage service registry key is missing. The ProtectedStorage service registry key is located at the following path:
To resolve this issue, register the Protected Storage service to the Windows NT-based OSes Registry by performing the following steps:
1. Type the following command at a command prompt:
2. Close all programs and restart the computer.
Better Link thanks Bill.
Now, G.. I have visited teh registry and I am not quit sure what I should be looking for? Accessed Protectedstorage and there are two folders, Enum & Security. I am assumimg I should be looking in enum. Please describe what I should be looking for.
I did try, at a command prompt C: %systemroot.... but a message came back this in neither an internal or external command and nothing happened.
What did I do wrong? This is good I am learning, jusst a few more directions.
My second rig has W2k so I compared it's registry to the rig with XP w/SP2. They are identical except for the data in REG_Binary in the security folder. There are minor dfferences in the sequence of values under data.
I.G. W2K 01 00 14 80 90 00 00 00 9c 00 00 00 14......
XP 01 00 14 80 78 00 00 00 84 00 00 00 14......
Is this the problem, if not, and the necessary key is there I will proceed with 'slip streaming SP2" as BP has recommended.
You help is appreciated,
Will try and get back to you in a day or two.
