Frustrating DSL Modem / Ethernet Card Issues

I'm new with LAN stuff, so bear with me please.

I hooked up the modem Verizon sent me for signing up with them for DSL. I hooked the modem up to the ethernet port, and the modem seems to be connected to the Verizon network, but my computer can't access the internet. The problem might be in the onboard ethernet port. Running ipconfig, my IP address for the ethernet adapter starts with 169, which does not work with my modem's IP address beginning with 192, according to the Verizon tech support guy.

Is there any way to get these two things to become compatible without getting a new 10/100 card and filling up a precious PCI slot?

a 169.254.x.x ip means that you system is not getting an IP by dhcp. did you try winsockxp fix?

Hey Brian

What i try to do is to reinstall the LAN card.
After doing so i would run windows network wizard and let it
configur my computer to use this modem.

If your Modem is a Modem/Router Combo, the IP should be 192.168.xxx.xxx

If it a Modem Only the IP should be an External IP and you need to use the PPPPOE software, or better get yourself a Cable/DSL Modem (Link to: DSL Routers and PPPOE. )

In General you can debug the Network Setting of the computer following these steps.

Step One. Check the Network parameters in the Computer’s Device Manager. Make sure that the drivers are installed correctly; there is No IRQ conflict, and No Ghost installation. http://www.ezlan.net/faq#ghost

Step Two – Verify Basic network setting in the OS: http://www.ezlan.net/Installing#verify
If the above two Steps indicates that every thing looks good but functionally it does not work.

Step Three. Check (and repair if necessary) the Socket Layers, Winsock, and or refresh the TCP/IP Stack. http://www.ezlan.net/clean#refreshnet

In my experience, no DSL connection is almost always due to poor line conditions. I would insist that a technician come out.

From personal experience, my step-mom's dsl was unable to connect due to a defunct house alarm that no one knew was there. It took the dsl tech 10 minutes to find it and bypass.

I agree with BP. In the few Verizon DSL installs I've done for clients they always sent a modem only, NOT a router. Although...the router's default IP was a 192.168.XXX.XXX number to check it's status.

I would call Verizon and have them make a house call as well. At the very least they'll bring a laptop to prove it works/doesn't work.

Also...did you run the setup CD included with Verizon. They are in fact a PPPoE type DSL...which...makes you register a username/password during setup for the connection.

You did install the filters that come with the kit, right?
