Question about windows installer and WMA

This is going ot be a somewhat open ended question in that my limited knowledge does not permit me to fully understand how these things work or how they could get corrupted..ect...

Although I would prefer to keep my computers personal problems my own.. I learned something yesterday that might be a clue as to the problems I am having and have had over the course of the last three weeks or so...

When trying to install or uninstall certain programs and lately it seems to be happening most all the time... I am having the installsheild ,which runs to opoen and installl programs ...and games ect.. stop somewhere along the loading screen when it checks for my HW or computer configuration. Sometimes it may hang and not start the bar loading at all, and often times it stops somewhere along the loading point.

Most all the time I go into the processes panel and click on that and stop the loading or program or just check it out and it always says like normal the program is running. It is not ammater of it being slow..but it never starts to proceed again ever over a course of time.

Now last night I get this error type message..not the normal one that brings up a screen that says my windows installer is corrupted or some such and also I got this message that my WMA service is not working properly or corrupted also.

My thinking is that the system needs the windows installer as crutial for loading and uninstalling programs.. is that not correct??? Now the typical installsheild is a third party extension installer or is it the same one windows uses to inistall??

Is there some possible way to correct all of this ..like reinstalling the windows installer and is that on the OS disk as part of the OS package?? and.... what is this WMA do exactly and for obvious reasons it seems it is directly linked to the installer??

I have already let most here know that I need very badly NOW to reinstall a fresh install of WXP Pro ASAP. I have not done it yet for personal reasons ..but I will in the next few days I believe.

Some or alot of this has been caused by registry problems and cleaners possibly and just over a course or normal and heavy computer usage.

Most everything other than installing something or uninstalling ( of which i do not know if evrything is not uninstalling correctly...but in the Control Panel method, which is preferred, I have a few things that just do not do anything at all when trying to uninstall. They just stay put.)

Hopefully, I have done a good job of explainn all of this as this has really never happened before on any install of windows after some usage in time.

Thanks for some pertinent answers and info given..

I understand that you do not want to reinstall windows. However in the XP setup you can do a repair. This will only copy over the needed system files and might correct the problem. OF course do not select the first repair option. Wait until after you have selected your HD and pressed F8 to acept the licence agreement. The other option is to do a chkdsk /f to hopefully find missing files and stuff. To do this go into the properties of your HDD and click on tool and scan HD for errors. Make sure to check fix errors automatically. Might take awhile.

Did you check to see if the service was running? I would start there. If its not running you should determine if another service failed and finally look for missing files. It could be simply disabled services from a guide on the internet. I see them posted on sysopt all the time - how to streamline XP/2000 services, etc...

The Event Log and RPC (Remote Procedure Call) services must be working for WMI to start. Windows Installer also requires the RPC service. Did you disable the RPC service since some worms had targeted the service - not a worry with XP SP2 and a couple patches after SP1.

Thanks guys ... Thats about what I expected... It is always a hard issue for me to discern as I am one of those idiots that need to take some more courses on just how this OS works.. I understand most things OK ...but when you get into the internal structuring and all these services and such I get lost...

The first thing I did was of course go into my running processes and check things out there. I truned on a few things ..that might pertain ..and most everything else including WMI was already turned on... yes.. i di run chkdsk ....actually more than once in the past week..and it found nothing as far as I know...

I think its a case of some missing files somewhere that need the installer to work... ( more than likely something in sys32.dll files )but really I have other issues alll over and I need to do a reinstall. I have been riding on the edge for awhile in the past few months as just three months ago evrything was running top notch..but I have like two virus programs... a very comprehensive spyware tool..and so many programs of a differing sort ..alot of I never use ... just too much junk to get messed up along the way it seems.

I will re-read all of your two gentlemens honest answers and check things out a bit more... but I am kind of resigned to doing a fresh install..in the next few days sometime.

Yep.. it must be time to clean out that ole rectum and flush it out....start anew.

    LOL
