Fan starts then stops,no CPU power
Hiya,
I've heard that power suppy units go bad,but what happens when the motherboard goes south? What are the symtoms?
In all the years I have been on a computer, this has never happened before to me.
I am running a barebones(self-build) Win98 / 512 DDR PC2100 Ram / Intel Pentium 4 Celeron / Sis 645 MoBo Elitegroup Systems, XP4 Chipset/Supersocket 478 Bios Type-AMI (02/18/02) ATX mainboard / M930 MoBo/ 30 Gig Hard drive. About three years old.
This is the problem. I was online, looking at some articles when suddendly, the computer / power went bye bye.
I switchhed off the tower on/off switch, shut off the power strip, unhooked the plug from the wall. Waited five minutes, rehooked all back together and..........NOTHING! I looked for a reset switch on the back of the tower, but nothing. Maybe inside?
Is it possible that the power supply went bad? Is this something that can be replaced to fix the problem? I have all my hard drive info I need to get. I am on another friends computer, I had while installing memory, sound and AGP cards for her..thank goodness to that.
It was not raining at the time, (but it was raining a few hrs ago) no electrical storms, that I know of.
When I try to turn on the power on tower, there is certainly no fan running,no lights flashing,no sound at all from the tower. The power strip works good and everthing else works fine, on the power strip and on the monitor, printer, scanner.
I hope I didn't fry the processor/MoBo. Didn't smell anything burming/smoking....other than my nerves.
So, Does this sound like something that has known to happen, and is it fixable? If so, is there a shock problem I should be aware of trying to replace the power suppy? Is this easy, and do these power suppy boxes go out,or do you think the computer is fried?
Ok...I'm baaack.
We did test the power supply with three other Power units and my new 400w Antec, and the same problem with the fan turning for a sec or so then stopping. Even though this looks like a power problem, could it still be the motherboard? Process and Eliminaton can be costly. The connectors from the front switch to the MoBo looks good.
I wonder if I replace the new power supply, replace this board with a Intel 4 2.4 processor with MOTHERBOARD, and XP,if that would fix the problem. Does that mean I have to replace my Video MX440 Geforce and my Creative "LIVE" Blaster Soundcard,or will this support it?
If i replace the hard drive with a new HD,what do I have top look for as far as compatibuility with the MoBo, or does this matter?
Thanks a bunch! Have a nice day! ..... At least better than mine. :-)

Install a new motherboard??

If I needed to replace my motherboard with another new one,is it easy to do? meaning are they universal boards that will fit?
What dimensions do I look for?
I am having a problem with my power. ( see "Fan starts then stops"...post in hardware/ motherboards)

sounds like a bad motherboard. check it for bad caps: http://www.badcaps.com/ it's possible that the cpu is bad, but motherboards problems tend to be more common.
If it is standard ATX, then a standard ATX board should fit. You would then have to do a repair install on windows or else you'll get a blue screen upon boot.
