How to loc IP addresses?

My home network consists of 10 comps in a wired/wireless config. I'm on an Adelphia Cable Modem. Generally everything works well except for one annoying occurrence. I'm using UltraVNC for its remote desktop (XP Home) and every time the cable modem goes down and is reset, it changes all the IP addresses.

Ultra VNC has no provision for detecting the changed IP addresses and I have to run around to all the comps to get the new ones. Networking is not my forte. Even though I set this network up I count on it "just working." Is there a box to check to allow it to keep its IP address and where is it? Will this affect the workings of the cable modem?

I assume that you are using External IPs that are assigned dynamically.

If it is so you do not have a Local Network but rather your Network is part of a WAN called the Internet.

Get a Cable/DSL Router and configure your computers as a LAN and your Internal IPs can be set to be always the same.

There are utilities that can read all the LAN’s IPs from one computer however it probably will not work correctly if your Network is not configured with internal private IPs.

I am using a Linksys Router for the wired boxes and a Netgear Wireless Router with WAP. Each comp connects to the internet directly. The addresses are all 192.168 series and the main comp attached to the Cable Modem also shows a 169.254 address, so I thought the 192s were internal. Do I need another (DSL) router then to replace the Linksys?

I'm going to try Netscan now.

Edit: You're right. It only shows the computer it's on.

You can use computer names instead of IPs on local networks. They don't change.
Could you give us a better description of your network?
I am particularly curious about what, if anything, is plugged into the WAN side of the wireless router.

UltraVNC requires the IP addresses along with the computer name (which isn't necessary) to work. The wireless router serves two laptops and two desktops in out-of-the-way places. It uses WEP (correction) 128bit encryption.

The Netgear wireless router is attached to the Linksys router in one of the "regular" ports along with all the other wired comps. There is also a cable for an older hub with my old Win95, etc. comps on it.

The Teryon Cable Modem has all ports filled - cable, power, PC and a line to the Linksys (I'm guessing since the routers are on the other side of the wall in a closet to minimize wire tangle).

One of "the other" comps has the Netgear wireless setup on it. Could that be a problem?

As I say, everything works great, except that pesky IP change.

If I have it wired wrong for a Local Network please let me know.

Just because I'm bored waiting for my boyfriend to get back from the Father's Day golf outing, I'll list my comps, most of which I've built. I was the one who designed and supervised the Cat5 cable-laying when the house was built, along with a killer sound/tv/DVD/CD system.
