    restore a formatted drive

    I was using a rescue and recovery software to create a file that would let me restore my computer, it gives 2 options one to use cds and the other to use a usb drive, i used my usb drive and i thought it would just store the files it need to the drive, little did i know it formatted all 250 GBs of data on the drive, data i need. What is the best software to use to restore this data, if it is even possible? As long as the software is less than 100 bucks i am willing to do it. Please let me know. I see that Norton offers this in their system works, does anyone have any experience with this?

    Norton's Ghost or Acronis True Image , both will make backup images of a drive or partition.

    The cheapest one I have found is active@partition recovery . You can try it first before you buy to be sure it will work for you. It saved me a few times.

    thankyou for all of the replys, i have never used any software like this, if i try one of these free ones and it doesn't work, is it possible that it will damage any files. In other words should i try a free one or just drop the bucks for one like getdataback. i really want to minimize my loss of data, as i am sure i have lost some anyways.

    you will need a separate hdd in addition to the original drive, so make sure you have one with enough capacity for all the old data.

    None of them are free. You can only see if it will work for your application, but you will have to pay for it to actually do the restore. I won't hurt anything to try and they all use essentially the same assembly language routines so price and additional utilitys really is the only difference. The one I pointed you to worked fine for me half a dozen times so far.

    PC Inspector is free. They also make a special app for recovering from flash media.
    PC Inspector Smart Recovery

    Restoration is another very good app for recovering files from flash media.. It too is free and runs from a floppy.

    Be sure not to install any recovery program to the target drive or you will be overwriting more files.

    ok, thanks for all of the info, i didnt realize i would need another drive to hold the restored info, but i guess it makes sense. Sounds like i better wait till i get home and have more resources i am in the middle of mississippi right now and our house here doesnt even have a landline phone or tv or even a mailbox
