Cloning and SID
Once again the Kornster seeks the wisdom and advice of the Sysopt community.
I am cloning hard drives using the overpriced OmniClone 5u. Do I need to chenge the SID on the cloned drive? I was going to use the SID changing utility from sysinternals.com if I should be changing the SID.
I was told by the previuos network admin that changing the SID is not necessary on our network. We are running a Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Pro client environment. We are also in a static IP environment, but will be moving to DHCP next year.
As always the Kornster appreciates your help and support. Thanks.

Mod w/ an attitude
Changing the SID is only required when the network is upgraded to Active Directory, but it sure doesn't hurt to have them right before that point. It only takes a few seconds to chage the SID.
I like NewSID and it's easy setup.

Thanks Sterling. I did leave out one item: We are on Active Directory already. I am just going to start changing the SID on each new PC or Laptop I roll out since it won't hurt anything.
I have had so many conflicting bits of info on this subject though. Even the info web page for the newSID program on the sysinternals.com website says that duplicate SIDs are not an issue on a Domain; only in a Work Group environment. Maybe when they say Domain they do not mean Active Directory?

Stark Raving MOD
when you make your image, you need to use sysprep to clear the sids. all the books/tests I've taken say NOT to have duplicate SIDs.
domain=AD in the microsoft world.

Got it. Thanks for the help and the info. I am going to use NewSID manually on each drive until I learn and get a Sysprepped drive image ready.
As always the Kornster appreciates your help.
