    Free AV for a Year

Those of you looking to try free AV software, Computer Asscociates will let you for 1 YEAR, for free.

Not like most companies (Paid companies) who only test for 90 days.

Yes...I know, plenty of viable and working 100% free apps out there.

    Here's just another choice...that's all.

Computer Associates stuff is pretty good.
Not trying to start a flame war...just giving folks another option...that's all.

Don't need to hear "This is the best, no...this is...no...this is what I use."

    JUST ANOTHER OPTION!!!

The CA anti-virus program is (to my knowledge) just a slightly modified version of a Melbourne made scanner called VET that they bought a year or so ago.
Its not any better than NAV at picking up viruses which is why I stopped using it a while ago and switched to one of the free ones. You know the one I mean

At least this trial is for a reasonable period.
The number of people I come across that buy an HP or other brand name PC and use the trial of NAV but never buy it is amazing. After the 3 months, they just click on the 'ignore' button whenever it tells them they aren't protected any longer, and keep using their PCs for file sharing etc etc etc.

PestPatrol was a half decent program before CA got their hands on it.

CA’s AV may be free but it may not be that good.

I would rather pay the money, get Kaspersky Personal V5, and be safe.

It just is not worth going for lower down the league table option – free or otherwise.

Users needs a decent AV program = Kaspersky Personal V5
Users need a decent spyware ect program = CounterSpy by Sunbelt
Users need a decent software firewall program – ZA and SyGate free, ZA Pro, or Kaspersky Anti-Hacker.
Users need a router with built in firewall preferable.

Windows and all AV, spyware and programs need to remain updated at all times

Now you are safe, it is just up to you now whether you download dubious files etc.

Try telling that to many of my stupid clients! They think that just by having an AV installed they will be protected for ever and ever.
Some of the stupid jerks even turn the auto-update feature off, even when they have an always-on adsl internet connetion.

Since this thread is about free security; there is an app that is free for home use that more experienced people may want to try.
It will work along with most firewall/AV combinations people may have but will offer better level of protection. It will prevent code injection and a host of other things. It will give you far more control over things happening on your pc; and a much higher level of security. With it you can prevent loading of any dlls such as wups.dll that windows loads when you shutdown your pc. You can use it to allow/disallow Injecting code through system-wide and local Windows Hook DLLs, launching ActiveX/COM modules, mapping Browser Helper Objects in Internet explorer and Windows Explorer etc.

p.s. if you decide to use this program be prepared to make rules as the default rule list is small.
