Bad Memory

Well, after my little incident where things became so corrupted (and me so frustrated..couldn't even operate in win), I wiped it all, and during the reinstalls of Win98, errors and all kinds of fun things kept happening.

Final culprit: Memory stick bad.
It even was tellling me so at boot up ("memory test fail"), but would still run (for the most part! hahah)

Now: Is there a way to test it to see if it's bad (maybe motherboard just doesn't like it, or I singed them with static while playing around in the case?), but not on my machine? ie: I don't have a CompUSA here, but I do have Staples, and they repair PCs, and many shops in town do. Is it worth taking it in? Or just bite the bullet and consider it lesson learned?

I inquiring about the warranty right now... it$ 128M, so I hope like %*^# they will at least exchange it.

Lesson: Buy only GOOD name brand memory. You will save more in the long run.
Not a pleasant lesson...

Some boards are VERY picky...sure wouldn't hurt to try it in another system. Most sellers do NOT guarantee compatibility, so if you send it back, and they say it checks good, many will charge you a "restocking" fee...usually 20%

Mu, just went through the same thing yesterday. Machine had been running fine for about 6 months. First indication was PAGE FAULT errors from windows. Then started seeing the fail message at boot. Nothing had been done to this machine, no case off, no nothing. This was a 32meg stick in this case. My thoughts are that !@#$ just happens sometime. Sdram is no different from any other part, sometimes they "just" fail.

aw

Awwall... yup.. and a bummer it is too! hahaha

magk9: at this point, they can restock it, as a matter of fact, they can restock it where the 'sun don't shine!' hahhaah
I wouldn't mind only losing 20% of my 'investment' rather than the full 100, since it's not good in my machine either way. weird.. it worked up until recently.
I would like them to replace it, because then I could at least sell it to someone who could use it, or give it to my sister or something.

hahahaha That's life!

CMonster: got a chuckle out of your network card/phone cable goof! sorry to hear about it! just add it to the list, right?
