    Norton LiveUpdate problem

I uninstalled Norton Personal Firewall 2003 prior to installing GoBack 4.0. I re-installed NPF and now when I run LiveUpdate I get an " LU1814: LiveUpdate could not retrieve the update list" error. I have internet access through a cable modem/router and I can access the internet just fine. Before uninstalling the firewall LiveUpdate worked fine.

Make sure you allow Norton Live Update or Antivirus, or Norton
Systemworks (whichever you are using) to have access thru
the Firewall .. it needs to be able to both Send & Receive thru
the Firewall for your updates to work

Also check this link from the Norton Site:

This has turned into a real nightmare. I have tried everything that Symantec says to, but I can't get rid of this error. I have updated LiveUpdate, updated virus definitions, ran a virus scan. I even uninstalled Norton Personal Firewall 2003, Norton System Works 2003, and GoBack 4.0. I re-installed just the firewall and on the first try I was able to run LiveUpdate, but when I rebooted and tried to run it again, I got the same error again. Should I give up on NPF2003 and/or NSW 2003? I have never had problems like this before. I also have Vcom SystemSuite 5, which I have never tried, I think it includes a firewall, but I could also run the ZoneAlarm firewall instead. What about NSW2005 and NPF2005. I am currently running NSW2004 and NPF2004 on my own system (this one is my daughters).
    I'd greatly appreciate any advise.

Will it run if you disable the firewall?

Nothing wrong with Norton System Works
Pro 2003 version .. I use it myself on my
computer .. As to the firewall, why not just
download the free version of Zone Alarm ?

Also, did you try running a Virus / Trojan
scan in Safe Mode ? ... Your machine might
    have picked up something.

Also, try uninstalling the NPF 2003 again
along with NSW 2003 and this time delete
any registry keys that are associated with
Norton ... Then reboot, & reinstall them, first do NSW2003 and see if it auto updates .. if it does, try adding back in NPF
2003 and see what happens .. You also
    have a copy of NSW 2004 & it's firewall ..
Why not use that on your computer ?

Note: You might want to download & run AVG Free .. from www.grisoft.com
Again, do this in Safe Mode

Norton might not find the problem

Allgamer ... it sounds like he has a
    Firewall configuration problem, since he
said in his post that Disabling the Firewall
let Live Update Run .. he did not say wether he is running XP with SP2 or not
and wether or not the Windows XP built in
    firewall is also Enabled

I had a similar problem on a friends pc
with NSW 2003 Pro .. It cleared after going to Symantec & downloading the
Intelligen Live Updater latest update file.

I also showed him how to Manually check
for updates & reminded him to check once
a week (northon releases updates on
    Wed each week)

I don't have the program in front of me at present, but the program approval process goes something like this:
Open NPF, Look for Status and Settings, choose Personal Firewall, choose the Configure button, and choose the Program Control tab. If Automatic Program Control is not checked, try checking it. It should automatically grant acces to it's own update service but if this does not work, go back and choose the Manual Control instead. You may have to uncheck Automatic Program Control to do this. Scroll through to see if you can find Live Update or LU . If you do not see it, try the Program Scan button. When you find the Live Update program, check it and select Permit All.

    there's an easier fix

Just WipeOut everything, and Start from Scratch
