PC 5.1 SS to SS Reciever???

    Hi,

I just recently bought a projector, a BenQ6100, and I need to hook-up my pc to it via my RCA Surround Sound reciever.

I have an ASUS 5.1 Onboard MB with the 5 different colored output jacks (like a mic plug, not sure what those are called). What I want to do is run my audio, from my pc to the reciever but I'm not sure how to do this. I want to have it in surround sound if possible but on the reciever, I only have the RCA type Left/Right (red/white) audio inputs. Can this be done and how and what do I need?

Video-wise, I'm all set. I'm running a monster s-video to the reciever, and another monster s-video running from the reciever to the projector.

    Any suggestions??

i'm afraid the PC 5.1 system ain't exactely compatible with the Home Theater type of 5.1 system

you can only use your GREEN output from a 3.5 jack to a RCA jack to the back of your BenQ reciver

and hopefully it lets you channel all the effects through it.

is the Audio on your ASUS from RealTek or the other company?

either ways, you should be able to configure it for 3D sound in stereo, and some other programs to pass the Sub channel into the stereo

    Pretty sure it's Realtek.

I think that's what I will do, run the 3.5 jack, split to L/R to the RCA reciever and maybe I'll get lucky and get somewhat of a surround sound.

I used to play Socom II (PS2) through this reciever and got awesome sound. That was through the RCA plugs and the Dolby split up the channels I guess. In any case, the surround sound was there. Then I went to the digital optical audio cable route and noticed somewhat of an improvement but could have done without...not sure what the hype is about those cables.

The main reason I would like to retain any sort of surround sound is to play DVD's through my PC instead of my PS2 and to play Counter Strike Source, but I may just be wasting time/money.

So you're saying there is nothing I can do to use my existing SS setup and speakers and that I'd have to purchase a PC Sound system or something if I was to use all those jacks??

Optical is great because there is NO signal degradation at all.
Your amp has digital in right? Your soundcard should have a digital-out setting where you can just run a single cable and the amp will do the 5.1 decoding.
The way Gamer has reccomended will only give you dolby surround (left centre right rear) but if you run a digital optical or even coax from your PC to your amp you ill get true 5.1 sound with each channel being transmitted seperatly

some never mobo does come with the SDIF but the older ones does not, so it might or might not work for him

and some order 5.1 amp does not have that either, yet the newer ones does

Older 5.1 amps will come with 5.1 analogue inputs though, and most motherboards made in the past 3 years have these outputs, so discrete 5.1 sound can usually be had, even if you don't have any digital interfaces or a digital amp.
