    Bad Clusters

I am running WIN 95 on an IBM clone and when I turned the machine on, it automatically ran Scandisk and then did a complete surface scan which took several hours. Along the way I encountered over 50 bad clusters and chose to fix them. What can cause this and how can I prevent it from happening again.
