Western Digital 74Gb SATA Raptors 10 000 rpm

is it normal for these HDD to sound so loud?

they reminds me of the old HDD back in the 8088 and 8086 era

you know it sounds like rocks rolling inside in circles

okay is not as bad as it seems, but these is the first time i use them, so i have no base for reference

i wonder if the 34 Gb version does the same.

the Normal SATA drives at 7200 rpm Maxtor 300 Gb sounds normal just as I expected

so anyone else has used those Raptors?

does your sounds these loud as well?

Seems like a fairly common problem with WD drives in general from what I have read in the past.

My WD 80GB SATA drive doesn't make a sound. You can't hear it unless your ear is on it. And even then it's just barely audible.

Dad has one also, an Ultra ATA and his is silent as well. There's nothing wrong with WD drives.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with WD drives. I said I have read several times where people said they were loud.

On, no, I don't care if they make noise or not, they are still good drives. Way better than IBM drives have been for me

I have a Seagate 80 gb SATA that's pretty loud too. I would be more worried about any drive that didn't make a sound.

I've got two of the "old" 36 gig raptors in a RAID 0 config on one of my systems. I can hear them on power up and when running, but it is just a whine in the background. Are you running your os off em? How about TSR's? My other drive in that system is a Maxtor 120 gig something or other. It does sound like "rocks" when be accessed versus the Raptors which just seem to make a clicking noise. I use the Raptors for capturing video, so they get a lot of use. Even still, they are pretty quite compared to other drives I've used.

I don't have a SATA but my 2 WD drives on this computer, and 2 WD in my other computers make no noise whatsoever. They are a mixture of 30GB - 120GB drives. Actually now that I think about it I've haven't had a drive make any real noise since my oldschool Quantum Fireball drives in the mid 90s.

Talk about loud, how about the old Quantum Bigfoot... that sucker sounded like somebody beating a couple of soup spoons together!

    Yeah okay then it's normal

yes, i only hear it during Power On, that makes the most noise, the rest of the time, is fine

except when you do heavy access, like Copying a 4 gig file from one driver to another.

re: WD being quiet, that is only true for the normal speed ones 7200 rpm

all 10000 rpm ones makes quite a lot of noise

    They're a tad noisier..AG.

But...I've had my pair of the little brothers in 0 for some time....they love each other...

    I did recently up from a 60GB Maxtor to a 80GB Seagate....

That Sea is pretty darn quiet!!!

I have one computer with three HD's. One is a Seagate 7,400 RPM and the other two are WD 10,000 RPM Raptors. The computer is as quite as a ***** cat napping. Oh, it also has five fans.
