Hi does anyone know where you can buy 8.5gb DVD+ or -RWs from? I can find + Rs but no RWs.
I, like you, have been on this quest for about a month now and I've found nothing. Many of us are looking for something better than rumors about DL RW disks.
I don't normally pass on rumors. However, in this case, I'll pass it on hoping someone can confirm or dispute.
I've looked at the doc's for many DL burners and there's no mention of + or - RW DL support. They do support everything backward of -R & +R DL.
The rumor passed to me was; "this is merely part of a planned marketing strategy and soon the drives/media will be available." However, the current DL drives may not function RW without at least a firmware upgrade. Further, software may not support DL RW and current software may not be freely upgraded. The media is rumored to be a higher capacity as well - perhaps as much as 12 gigs.
The fact that DL drives have gone way down in price, coupled with past marketing strategies, would indicate there is some truth to the rumor.
Time will tell and, if anywhere, the newest "truth" will be found here on SysOpt, I'm sure.
How about it members. Any one "in the know" about this subject?
BTW: Hope this gets moved to Data Storage.
Your lucky if you can find dvd+r media that's dual layer. I have yet to see them anywhere on the big island. From what I have seen, the price is to high anyway. It seems it's just bragging rights for the manufacturers for now.
Hello ukulele & Munday63,
Yes, they are hard to find in stores and when you do, they are about $10.00 per disk.
Here's a CAUTION: The other day, I was "grazing" at MicroCenter and found a 10 pack marked DVD DL +R for $39.99. I believe the brand name was Verbatim and I almost bought a pack for my son's birthday. What a deal!
Well, when I read the small print, the pack included one (1) DL +R and nine (9) +R single layer disks.
If this doesn't get moved to Data Storage pretty soon, suggest you post there and reference this thread with a link. It's likely to get more responses in that category. I started to use "Report this to a Moderator" but there was a caution indicating to use that function only for some serious violations.
Hail to the Victors
At my local Sam's club, I can get a spool of 100 DVD +R, 8X for 45 bucks.
Why you'd want to spend 10 bucks for a single DL disk at those prices is beyond me.
The only reason I'd think of it is to copy a movie 100% without the compression.
Sorry...not worth it IMO, yet...anyways!!
Hail to the Victors
Give it a year, when the DL and speed/price wars die down.
I can remember Christmas time, 2003, I was paying 50 to 60 bucks for a spool of 50 DVD+R, 4X.
Look at 'em now, a year later, twice as fast, half as much!!
