    wow..really weird

ok... my internet like randomly stopped working on my computer.. both IE and firefox. i can still access the other comp in my house (the one im on now) through the network, and its obviously has internet ( i am posting this right now... ).. i thought it might be a router issue, so i switched the ethernet cable from the non-internet comp to a different port on the router, same results
also, when i shut it down or restart from the start menu, i get that scandisc screen that happens when you dont properly shut down the comp..
    here are the comp specs:
    windows 98 se
    shuttle an35n ultra mobo
    amd xp-m 2500+ @2.1ghz
    512mb pc2100ram
    30gb maxtor hdd
    msi geforce3 ti200

Not sure of the exact command syntax for
Win98, but try to renew the ip from the '
    command line

My HSI/Cable Modem isn't working. What do I do?

    1.

    Release and renew your IP.

    Open winipcfg **
    Release IP
    Unplug Cable Modem
    Reboot Computer
    Plug in Cable Modem
    Open winipcfg **
    Renew IP

    **
    In Win98/Me
    Click on Start/Run
    Type winipcfg

    In WinXP
    Click on Start/Run
    Type command
in the DOS box type ipconfig/release or ipconfig/renew

The last time I checked, we had a networking forum.

    Moved.

    Watch your subject titles, please.

Still could be a few things:

    Possible bad Ethernet Cable

Possible bad NIC Card in the PC

NIC Card not enabled .. check in Network
    connections

Firewall set wrong .. if used

Router may need to be rebooted ..
usually by a full power off for a few mins
and back on . The router tables may be corrupt

Make sure your computer is to set
    automatically obtain an IP Address
This should also be on network connections for the NIC card
You will have trouble if you specified an
IP address and it is not correct.

Also, check your browser is set for:

    "Direct connection to internet"

hmmm.. nothin really seems to be working..
is it possible to reinstall windows on my hdd without reformatting? if yes, what possible problems might come up by doing that? i think theres some kind of driver problem, but i cant seem to figure out how to fix it besides a fresh install of windows

Sounds like a good time to upgrade to XP

but if you reinstall 98 without a reformat its still possible that if ur system is infected with something that it ll be again
