Gone Fishin'
The problem with a 45 or 9mm and self defense is the law. You can't legally carry one around in most places and they are both too hard to hide unless you wear a trench coat everywhere. In reality a small 25 cal Berretta or something similar would be a lot more practical if you can hit something in the first place and a whole lot easier to conceal. Some are small enough to hide in a an empty cell phone.

In the USA it varies from state to state. But some states will honor CHL's (concealed handgun license) from other states.
I had to take a $100.00 ten hour class and pay I think about a $175.00 fee. (license is good for four years)
I hardly ever carry anything. I do keep a 2" barrel/5 round 357 in my cars glove box.
The CHL class was fun. Contray to popular belief, you can NOT shoot someone you see stealing your car.

Well I do not like hand guns, I think the average person does need one, they may want but not need, also a hand gun should not get in the hands of "JM talk" or "Mirland" that would be bad

[44mag = Run Forest Run
(i had a couple of these. they aren't even fun to shoot)
Depends on the make and model
The .44 cal Dan Wesson HV models and better balanced than say Rugers Blackhawks or Redhawks or S&W.
I owned 2 of them before I moved to Australia....
I would have one now but it would be almost impossible for me to legaly own one here.

... some answers;
.45 cal diameter (ACP round)= 0.451 inch
9mm Luger/auto diameter = 0.355 inch
Recoil from either is nothing to worry about but the 9mm has less.
I own and shoot examples of both calibers. The 9mm shoots flatter and typically holds more cartriges (its easier for some people (incuding some police) to hit their target (eventually).
9mms are a little more fun (and cheaper) to shoot IMO.
Both calibers are capable (in capable hands) of hitting targets out beyond 100 yards (although the 45 takes a bit more hold over).
The typical violent use occurs at less than 75 feet.
When asked to recommend a gun I recommend pepper spray since its effects are much less permanent if an accident happens.
Enjoy!

Automatic Colt Pistol - the round used in most .45 cal autoloading pistols world wide.
Enjoy!
