Although I'm not very familiar with the CG, my son was Navy. They are quite similar. You are smart to go with the IT side, a good education in that field will help you alot. Also, sign up for the GI bill, my son did and now, several years after his enlistment was up, he's going to college to help his future and the GI bill is helping pay it.

I know that I get 100% paid to go to school for whatever path I take in teh CG n Texas
that could be as soon as 3months or as long as 18 months before I would start school depends on if the school is open or not.

First off you need to pass the physical before anything is going to happen, I believe if you have a good grade average you can go to school while your in there but you have to sign for at least 6yrs or better so they get there use out of you for the investment.

My son passed the phys but he had a choice of a scholarship to suny maritime which is the merchant marine officer training school with same college classes as anywhere else. He opted for suny but is still debating reserve CC duty with 2mon of boot camp in the summer between class years. If he graduates suny he can go into the CC as an officer, as part of the curriculum is 2mo of sea trials, its his second year.

A friends son took electrical engineering joining the CC and he loves it. So I'd ask on your next visit if you qualify for school and make sure you get that straight, if so you should be signing a contract guaranteeing you go to school, forgot what form that was but ask about it recruiter will know. Matter of fact in my son's first year he was given a car to go to the high schools and give recruitment speeches to the seniors and will probably do it again this year.

Those schools are for your training while in the service of the C.G. The G.I. Bill will provide some financial assistance AFTER your tour of duty is up and you will want to further your education in an institution of higher learning, i.e., a college somewhere.

Like for instance, in my personal case...when I finally settled down somewhere and there was a Trade School nearby.. I took 4 years of Electronics Vocational Training. The G.I. Bill would have helped with my tuition and other expenses except it had expired by this time..so, its not forever...but you will need to sign up for it for future use..don't pass this opportunity by.

Well my cousin went into the CG and is in it now so I have also asked him about it to.

If you sign for six years then you should make it worth your while by going to school while your in there otherwise if you don't then at the end of 4yrs you can assess which way you want to go in case you change your mind.

Of course I talked to another guy who couldn't find work after he got out and signed back up.
