"I read that it can now play DVD-R/RW's is that also games or is it just movies?"
my ps2 and my friends (both old versions) could always play backup copies of my dvd's...i don't see why the new one wouldn't be able to play them.
I have never tried a burned ps2 game but i would imagine that a mod would have to be done for that

It will not play games on DVD-R, only movies or Home Videos.

Here's a update still haven't gotten one but found out some info. I didn't know before.
The older model PS2 consoles were discontinued in October of last year.
They (sony) are sitting on consoles trying to hype up the demand for it and make it look like it's a high end great demand system.
it has been recalled due to heat issues and broken drive doors.
I will not order from ebay or any online store cause of a lack of trust.

here's a letter from Sony for all to read.
Hello Chris,
Thank you for writing us.
The SCPH-50001 and SCPH-50010 models of the PlayStation(R)2 computer entertainment system have been
replaced by a redesigned console (model numbers SCPH-70011CB and SCPH-70012CB). There are no plans
to continue production of the SCPH-500xx series for the North American region at this time.
Again, we apologize if you are experiencing difficulty locating the redesigned PlayStation(R)2
computer entertainment system (model numbers SCPH-70011CB and SCPH-70012CB). Sony Computer
Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) is striving to meet consumer demand for the newly redesigned
PlayStation 2 console. We recommend that you continue to contact your local retailers, as well as,
online retailers regarding availability of the PlayStation 2 console.
Additionally, please be assured your feedback will be conveyed to Sony Computer Entertainment
America's ("SCEA") appropriate management.
Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.
If you have further questions regarding this message, please refer to your email case
