Many of the tools on tech tools can be run from a usb drive.

Another key is to look for applications that are "portable" like portable firefox, portable vlc, etc.

UBCD is a good compilation. Some people like Hiren's utility disc, but it's less than legal. You should also make a BartPE disc.
