Intel must be feeling the pinch if they are releasing stuff like this, it kind of reminds me of the first >1Ghz P3s that were very unstable.

I just bought a Prescott and it does honestly run hot as hell, inside my system gets so hot sometimes I have to remove the side panel to cool it down, I have 8 case fans and two vacums but still that thing gets to hot some times. wonder if they would give me my money back eh

that is why you need a big power supply and about 6 92mm fans and you should be fine

I'd look into a full tower server case. That way there is about a foot of clearance for hot air from the CPU and the PSU is still mounted right above the socket to help suck hot air out. Add a blowhole to the top and that should help... but having that large of a box shouldn't be needed for a processor to work. Sad Intel is putting stuff like that out. I really wonder how OEM systems which need to be silent are looking now.

Its now a reversal of the Athlon/P4 situation of a couple of years ago.
I wonder if the P4's thermal cut-off would be able to kick in fast enough to prevent the chip from going up in smoke if the heatsink was removed during full CPU utilisation?

I know that THG ran a video of the P4EE vs A64....when they took the heatsink off the P4EE, it didn't throttle...it cut off.

I think these CPUs will too...they just run too hot to run without a heatsink at any speed.

But a CPU that's still hot w/6 case fans...that's ridiculous. I have 3 120MM fans on low and 2x2.4GHz bartons (~200W) w/2CNPS7000Cus at mid speed, 9800 pro, raptors and 3 other 7200RPM drives...and they still fail to cause any heat issues.
