Video codecs and performance

do the video codecs you have installed on your couputer effect performance in any way. for example if your codecs were all messed up could u see a performance loss?

also which ones should i have installed? i have the divx one the xvid one and a couple others.

should i keep the codecs to a miniumm or not?

also if codecs do effect performance is there an app that i can download that will sort it all out?

Define what you mean by a loss in performance. Since video codecs are only used when watching video which uses that particular codec, I don't think you would see a drop in framerate in a game, for example.

i mean in just general performance like for example if i have 1000 codecs installed would my computer have to load those on startup therefore decreasing general performance?

No. The loss in performance will come from the spyware/adware that comes bundled with some of them.
