    XP shutdown end "edit" program

When I shutdown XP, the end program dialog comes up telling me that the "EDIT" program is still running -- I checked the task manager and cannot find an edit program running. I also did file search and could not find any file with the phrase "edit" in the name. Also, I cannot paste -- is this an XP OS failure or ? ANy advice on how to repair it?
    Thanks

Are you certain you searched the entire drive and not just your documents folders. You should have many files with edit in the name.

    REGEEDIT.EXE - Registry Editor
EDIT.EXE - DOS Based text editor
GPEDIT.MSC - Group Policy Editor Snap In (XP Pro Only)

A search on my entire C drive at work reveals 114 items. 34 of these items are part of Windows XP and should be there with even a fresh install.

You should use a program called MSCONFIG to look at your startup items. You should simply click start, select run and enter that name in the box and click OK to use it. Look on the startup tab. Remove programs that you can not identify as legitimate. I use google to search for names I do not know belong there.
