BSOD Help
Hi All,
Trying to help out a friend who just started getting a BSOD while playing a video game. I'm not having too much luck figuring out what the problem could be however, so i've attached a picture of the blue screen message.
The computer is a HP (not sure what model), running XP, P4 2.8, 512 ram, 120gb hdd, gf4mx440 vid card, dvd burner, cd drive, nothing overclocked (if you couldn't guess )
The computer has been running fine for over a year, no hardware upgrades or driver upgrades that I know of, which is what perplexes me.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Sorry the picture is a tad blurred.

Was the game Enter The Matrix by any chance? That was one of the few references I could find to that file - some people have had luck fixing the problem by upgrading their Realtek sound drivers:

The Stop: 0X7E error code is a "key code" to the solution.
Go here and search for Stop: 0X7E

fishybawb,
Thanks for the links, i'll have to check that out, but the game was not "Enter the Matrix" - it was "Zeus" - a sort of older RTS type game.
SRJ,
I had tried searching the Microsoft Knowledge base, but most of the errors that came up didn't really seem to apply. Most of the 0x7e errors had to do with computers that recently upgraded to windows xp (not the case here) or numerous USB problems. Another thing, none of the errors in the KB articles seemed to deal with the alcxsems.sys which this BSOD mentions.

Is this the ONLY game he BSODs on?

AFAIK, this is the only thing that has been causing problems. This is the first instance of a BSOD that this computer has had. Could it be something as simple as reinstalling the game, or a sign that something is starting to go, perhaps the RAM?

I would check the basics first...
Drivers (chipset, video, audio) and game patches.
If you suspect the RAM, then run memtest86 and see what it reports. If you think its CPU related, then run Prime95 and see if it gets any errors. SuperPI is another one that should spit out errors at you if there are problems with RAM or CPU.

May I suggest checking the CD if he is using one to play the game, for scratches or a dirty spot.

Thanks for all the replies, I'll check for any game updates and make sure that the disc is scratch-free, and post back on my results.
