Big Brother Bill is at it again!

Microsoft conceded that the feature, a unique identifying number used by Windows and a handful of other Microsoft products, had the potential to be far more invasive than a traceable serial number in Intel Corp.'s new Pentium III that has privacy advocates up in arms. The difference is that the Windows number is tied to an individual's name, to identifying numbers on the hardware in his computer and even to documents that he creates.

The combination of the Windows number with all these data, the company said, could result in the ability to track a single user and the documents he created across vast computer networks.

And how long has Win98 been out now...am surprised someone just discovered this...i also caught a portion of this on the tv news today...YIKES...

I'm right there with you Harvey! Hey, I knew this from the onset - I didn't care all that much for the manipulative nature of Win95 and I sure saw Win98 coming. I could tell by the way it acted, call it a feeling, the way it takes control of your system.

The way my friend's computer came up with someone else's name after updating something at the microsoft site - gee, I guess he must have used a copy of Win98 not licensed to him.

I can't bash Win95/98s compatibility with the widest variety of hardware, but mark my words, if MS had their way every program would have to be registered monthly in order to get an access number to use it.

And it is this very behavior that will fell the giant.

I heard that it was the p3 and win98 together that was the problem.

There is a patch due out to stop win98 and
Intel are changing something with there serial number so you can disable it.(anyone know what and how?)

wher in the reg. is the number i need to

search in you registry for your name(if you put in your name when you first installed 98) and in that same area you serial, cd key, name are all listed and alterable.

Why not go through your registry and change your personal info? Also do the same with the serial number. Mine is 1234567890 & xxxxxxxx...
