SP2 Update Installed Win Freeze at boot

I recently installed SP2 from windows update and when it completed it needed a restart, that was the last time i saw my desktop b/c it now freezes at the XP screen with the bar( what is the technical name for that) Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? I tried a chkdsk/p but i think its beyond that...

Would a fixboot or fixmbr do the trick?

You should try to boot into safe mode and perform a system restore or remove SP2 if you saved your previous file versions when installing SP2.

To get into safe mode simply press F8 at boot. You have to hit F8 in the right couple of seconds so I usually repeatedly hit F8 until I get the boot menu. Simply select safe mode from the list.

FIXBOOT and FIXMBR will not help you in this case.

Is there a system restore that can be run from the repair command console? I have never looked. I would try to find that info first. If so restore from the COnsole.

My next suggestion woiuld be to perform a repair install. You must have a device or software conflict. Something XP SP2 does not like.

Your computer can see the MBR and get to the XP boot information so that is why FIXMBR will not help.

FIXBOOT simply detects Windows Install and tries to fix the BOOT.INI file which also appears to be OK because Windows is partially booting.

Here is a link the MS thinks you should do in this case:
