    SysOpt for the rescue

It's kinda shameful to talk about this here but I love you guys and girls because you always help me when I need help so please don't laugh at me now. I recently built a computer for a customer and he also bought a copy of WinFax Pro to go with it. He's not so good with computers and he doesn't know how to send or receive faxes, so he called me yesterday asking me to go to his house tonight and give him some lessons (I'll charge him for it). The thing is, I DON'T know how to use WinFax myself, but for reputation's sake, I said "ok, I'll be there". What I need is some kind of tutorial about WinFax. Basic things like sending and receiving faxes, setting everything up, that kind of stuff. I guessing that the program looks something like Yahoo! mail with buttons such as Write, Send etc. Thanks for the help

    Hi Nothing -
HERE is a link to Symantec. You can download the users manual for WinFax Pro - just choose which version/OS.
    Best of luck

Its really very simple. When you install it puts an icon on your desktop called " drap and drop depot", drag what you want to fax over it and it will open up the program and fax it for you. Or you have a "send new fax" icon, I just put that in the quick launch toolbar. I think I pulled it off the desktop to do so, seemed like it was there.

Or, open up the message manager I think its called and all the controls are on the left, inbox, outbox, send new, cover pages, address book; all the good stuff.

Its really jusy common sense. You build computers, you can help him with this no trouble. Dont worry about it.

    It went bad

I couldn't send or receive any faxes. Everytime I tried to send a fax, I got an error message saying "no carrier". The modem wasn't making any noises too but it was recognized by WinFax so I'm pretty sure it is not a modem problem. Do you guys have any ideas?

What number did you try to send to? Is it good?

Every time ive seen no carrier it was a phone line problem or a wrong number. I get that mostly in bad rainstorms or such, as in wrong #. After it works fine.

My customer gave me the number and after a few tries without success, I asked him if the number was correct and he said yes. Let's say the area code here is 123 and I want to send a fax to my neighbour and his fax number is 555-5555. Is this how I'm supposed to type in his number?

    1235555555

I'll call him tomorrow and tell him to try another number and see what happens. This is the first time I have a problem like this, to not be able to make something work. I feel frustrated

    Thanks!

Yes, I'll charge him after I get that thing to work. For now I am just adding up the hours I spend over there.

    A couple of things.

I've used Winfax in the past...it's a resource hog...but, it does work.

Try calling your cell phone (Caller ID) to make sure that modem is working.

Also, you can integrate Winfax into Outlook...so he can see his sent items, incoming faxes, etc....just as if they were folders in Outlook. That's a hand tool if he's already using Outlook.

I actually had (I'll have to go look for it) about a 10 page power point file on how to use WinFax from my previous employer. We put it on all the field reps laptops...they loved it.

I'll see if I can dig that up for you, nothing...

I use Winfax 10 and think it's a doddle to set up, in fact it does most of the configuration itself - as you've already found out. I think the message "no carrier" usually applies only when the recipients end isn't functioning (not working/not set to recieve faxes) or isn't actually a fax machine!

You might want to check out the "Program Options" though - (see attachment) highlight "modem & Communications devices" and click the "properties" button, then highlight the correct Modem and check the "send" & "recieve" settings, then do a com port test!

    Good Luck!

edit: I'm only sorry I couldn't reply sooner - my BB has been fubar'd for 2 days, just back online this afternoon! never noticed how useless a computer was without internet before.

I brought his computer to my house and now I am trying to get this thing to work here. My neighbour has a fax machine and it works and I tried to send him a fax using WinFax Pro. As soon as I hit the "Send" button, I hear the modem dialing and it keeps trying to Connect but a couple of seconds later it says "No carrier". That is impossible because my neighbour's fax machine works. Am I that dumb?

If your using XP I'd try using it's fax console to see if that works. Easy to setup with their wizard and might help with troubleshooting the problem.
