Well lets see Ill start with the athlon these arent being phased out and replaced by the sempron line. The Bartons are the fastest of the 3. The semprons are built or some of them are built off the amd 64 core but dont have 64bit or the larger level2 cache. I also just read that they are getting ready to release a sempron on the 939 socket. If I were buying a new cpu I would get a amd64 even the 2500 would be faster then a barton. But if these are what your set on then the barton is the fastest atm.

$140 is a little out of my price range... I think ill have to go with the barton, is the barton really worth the extra $20-30?

The amd 64s are the new and future for amd the bartons are the past heh. I still have a barton myself but Im sooo ready to upgrade to a 64 they just out preform the bartons and the new bus speeds are unreal. If your looking to build something that will last ya a longtime get the 64. If your looking to save money or for a short term fix then go with the barton they are still a good cpu. Here is a really cheap barton http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...103-378&DEPA=1 they also have a retail barton 2600 for 94 dollars. Welcome to sysopt btw...

There is nothing wrong with an Athlon XP Barton for the majority of users. Heck, I have an XP1800 running at 360FSB and my system is pretty stinking fast. Around here it's easy to think you need a super duper A64 just to play games. You don't. You can buy a $55 Nforce 2 mobo and the Athlon XP 2500(Barton) and a decent video card and you will be gaming and everything just fine. If money is a big issue, like it is with most, then consider this:

    Athlon XP 2500+ $80
Shuttle Nforce 2 Ultra mobo $55
    512MB DDR400(2x 256MB Dual Channel) $80
    Radeon 9600XT/9800 Pro $135/$190

This will give you great performace across the board and you will be able to game just fine. It will support up to an XP 3200(400FSB), all the latest AGP video cards, and plenty of fast RAM. The XP CPU's can also be overclocked like crazy in a motherboard like this.

True, it won't perform as fast as an A64 system, but it will be killer nonetheless.

The athlon 64 bases boards don't actually have a conventional FSB. An 200Mhz-800Mhz (soon to be increased to 1600 I believe) hypertransport bus (up to 6.4Gb/sec) provides the system backbone, however the usual ram for a A64 is usually PC-3200, 400Mhz but you can stick in 500Mhz stuff if you want to overclock a lot.

Am I crazy or does Barton == Athlon? Semprons are mostly based on the t-bred or thorton core, they can't replace AthlonXP that's a Barton core! I think you meant Semprons are replacing Durons.

And Scott, where do you get such cheap ram and Radeon 9800 pro?
edit-n/m I got a better deal on the radeon

Yeah I agree Barton is a type of core used in an ATHLON chip... saying "athlon" covers a pretty wide range of cpu's...

For comparative purposes and since the 2500 was mentioned this article http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-239-1.htm is great. I just got a Barton 2500+ but haven't pushed it yet. If you're looking for bang for the buck this chip falls nicely into that category. Just through a good video card in and you're golden.

They're all ATHLON's. Barton/semptron are the name of the cores used.

Comparing Athlon to Barton is like comparing Pentium 4 to Northwood.

Yoshi, but what of the 35 watt chips? If you look at it in terms of %, with a 2400 @ 35w you're taking a 4% mhz official rating reduction and getting a 22% wattage reduction over the 2500 @ 45 watts!
