    SP2 and previous updates

Does WinXP SP2 have all the updates and patches developed since the first release? I have just reinstalled my XP and it is an early version. Windows has been trying to update my system, but I thought why not get SP1 or SP2 and avoid all the short updates.

SP2 will give you everythign, SP1 will give you everything released up to SP1's release...If you are not that experienced of a user, SP2 may be for you. However people have reported problems with SP2 if you see the sticky at the top of the Apps and OS forum. It may be best if you just install SP1 and all the updates with the exception of SP2

I had SP1 and many securitey patches after that. No problems. I installed SP2, windows download automatically and I went ahead and installed it. I don't want the AV and Firwall features, I have that already covered. I had problems after that but I am not sure that Icould attribute any to SP2.

I think I'll just do the SP1 and any patches since, but I know windows is going to keep trying to throw the SP2 at me. I know I can change my settings to "Do not download automatically...". Will it allow me updates for SP1 and not insist on SP2, as in the past?

Having SP1 and the updates is what i'm doing too...what I do is go to windowsupdate.com and choose the "custom installation"...from there you can choose which updates to install, and when it asks if you want SP2, you can just tell it "no" and skip over to the security updates.

SP2 has apparently downloaded since I started this thread. Last night there was a list of updates, but it wasn't SP2. I held off installing them and started this thread today. Now I checked my updates and all thats there is SP2. I would rather not go with SP2 yet. Where are all the files? In a temporary folder somewhere in WINDOWS?

You must have your computer set to automatically install updates. If you right-click on "my computer" and select "properties", it will tell you if SP1 or SP2 is installed.

    *Edit*
The windows update files I believe are stored in a temp folder called WUTemp

No, auto download and ask to install. I just changed it to Notify only.

Windows XP will continually nag you about SP2, even if you
Uncheck the box for the download, and even if you Check
the box that says "Do not notify about this update again"

Another microsoft feature that Will Not Do what it says it will.

I am keeping SP1 and whatever updates it needed. I will not
put SP2 on at this time .. causes more problems than it is worth.

However, if you don't have Antivirus, Spyware programs or
have the XP Firewall or something similar to Zone Alarm
installed and properly set up, then maybe XP with SP2 is
    good for you.

A wise idea, is not to logon on with Administrator Privleges
Set your account as Power User, use a Seperate Admin
account when you need to add programs. This will keep a lot
of Viruses from getting into your system. They can't install as
easilly if the User Privleges will not permit program installs.

Keep your children on Limited Privleges to keep trouble down.
Password the Admin Account (don't lose the Password)
