    Seeing double!

After reloading Windows XP (Dell 4600 computer), upon bootup you are given the option of booting from two Windows XP places. I thought a reload (reformat and complete load) would only have one remainiong boot location. Obviously I am doing something wrong. Any advice

All depends on how you installed it...

Looks like you created a second MBR (Master Boot Record)

it's simply asking which one you'd like to use upon boot.

You'll have to modify your boot.ini file.

    But...be careful...

Here's an article on it from MS. Without knowing what you did, or what yours said...it'll be tought to tell you exactly how to modify your correctly...See if this helps:

You are exactly correct. There are two entries in the Boot.ini file. I'm just not sure which one to remove. The process I used was to delete all partitions, create a new primary partition, format using NTFS, and load Windows XP Pro from scratch. Evidently, even by deleting and creating a partition, this does not totally remove previous boot information.

I have looked at Microsofts instructions and know how to remove one of the boot.ini records. I just don't know which one (1) or (2).

Right Clcik your "My Computer" icon and select properties.

Go to the Advanced tab and click the startup and recovery button.

You can uncheck the box that tells XP to display the OS choices. This will eliminate the error if you do not want to break your boot.ini.

If both entries are identical, it will not matter which one you remove. Please post it like dajogejr said and we can help possibly.

I have a similar issue as jmhcs.

I tried following the MS instructions to remove entry 2 (I have 4 in all; XP, XP, Recovery Console, and ME).

I am getting an error message about bootcfg not being recognized.

I think I am typing in the wrong command, but not sure.

Can someone explain to me the exact command and procedure to remove O/S 2, (Drive D and am I supposed to be in the black DOS-type box?

I get as far as the Notepad, and I can save boot.ini, but I can't save it in a folder as MS suggests.

Also Cut and Paste are greyed out in Notepad.

    Thanks for your help.
