Computer broke the phone line?

I built this PC for a buddy of mine, maybe a year or so ago. He has dial-up. Came up to me maybe a month ago and told me that he cant connect to the web. So he brings it by my house, i plug it in, connects first time. But when he brings it home, it doesnt connect. So i said there was something wrong with the phoneline, but he insisted to get a new modem. So i did, it was a temp fix, now he just called me up and said there entire phone line for the house is shot, im guessing no dial tone. Eather way, they had someone come out to the house to look at it, guy says its the computer. He has SBC phonelines or something of that sort. Is this even posible, if i remember correctly it was a 3m modem, running windows xp.

There is nothing wrong with the PC.
It's the modem ,It's dead (again) possible got damage in a storm, It happens quite often, it seams your friend needs a really good power-surge.
Me thinks.

He also tells me that it would connect fine, but after 5 mins or so it would say connection interupted. Seems like its a Fed up phone line, but there other laptop connects no prob, so i realy have zero idea on what it is

There you have it ,everything it's OK untill.........
Even with the PC off the modem it's reciving power/signal from the line,as long as it's connected to the wall.

Suden changes in voltage ( don't know the spelling of the right word in English) will kill any modem.

The laptop works fine probably because it's not 24/7 plug to the wall, it that was the case I would bet it will be dead by now too.
Again the modem got fried, outside forces a the most likely explination but......... if you really want to go nuts about it think about the Mobo sending the wrong voltage to the PCI , bad PCI slot or even a bad PowerSupply.
