Phone Line Splitter (for dial up users with 1 phone line)

I have a question concerning a supposedly existing "Phone Line Splitter."

I heard about this from my friend in an online game I play. He told me that this splitter allows you to talk on the phone, and surf the web with just 1 phone line. I only have 1 phone line so playing my online game can be difficult when people try to call my house and my lag is terrible. He told me this would deffinately help. Well, I tried looking up this item on the internet and all I found was a bunch of information on couplers and phone line legntheners. Does this item really exist and if so, could you supply a link to this item so I can read more about it?

this picture below is a phone line splitter, but I don’t think you can take calls and surf the web, unless your on DSL our BB etc, and I don’t think it will help your speed with gaming, you are very limited with Dial up, and most certainly going to have allot of lag with online gaming with no matter what you do.

    and the link

A phone line splitter will not do anything but make it so that you can plug more than one thing into whatever it is plugged into. Your friend is probably referring to one of these.

All it does it "catch a call" that is coming in. Basically, if you have call waiting, you can talk on the phone at the same time you are on the internet, but only for about 20secs, then you will be disconnected from the net. If you have call waiting you have to put a *70 in front of the number that your ISP dials to disable it. This way it will not interrupt your connection when someone calls, they will just get a busy signal.

It could be something different so if *70 does not work, call you phone provider and ask them.

Before I got DSL, I looked into many of these devices (like the one Vampiel showed you). With all of them, you need call waiting. If you do not have it, they are useless.

The product that Crazy Crusher showed me was the first thing I looked at when I went to the mall this past Saturday. I didn't buy it because I just wasn't 100% sure if it was the thing I needed. I haven't ever heard of the item that Vampiel showed me. It looks like it'll work. Yes, I do have call waiting. If I get this item and set it up right, will I get "lag waves" if someone tries to call my house?

I'm going to find the guy in my game that told me about the phone line splitter. He told me it would allow me to talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time just as if I had 2 phone lines. I'm trying to find every way possible to help my internet connection until I can get high speed internet.

Chances are there is a product out there that does what I need it to do. Finding it is the problem. I'll keep looking and I will look into the items shown above. Thank you both for your help.

It will allow you to talk on the phone and surf the web for a very limited amount of time. They usually advertise it as
allow me to talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time just as if I had 2 phone lines
But what they dont tell you is that its only for a small amount of time.

    To answer your question
If I get this item and set it up right, will I get "lag waves" if someone tries to call my house?
Yes it will cure this, but putting a *70 in front of the phone number that your ISP dials to will as well, but it wont allow any calls to come in (it turns off call waiting).

edit : let me back peddle on my above statement. It MAY not cure it if you are talking about gaming, I believe they just put your net connection on hold breifly so you dont get disconnected (im really not sure), so im not sure if it will lagg your game still, the disabling of call waiting is the only sure option that I am aware of.

My ITU v.92 Ready Fax/Modem has a feature called Modem On Hold. It allows me to take a phone call and leave me connected to the internet for 16 minutes. But, thats all it does is keep me connected, I can't surf the web or anything until I "Resume the internet connection." This doesn't fix my problem it only keeps me from having to redial up if someone calls my house.

This is the only way to solve your problem w/o getting another phone line or broadband.
