Basically, I want to fix a file and my friend asks me to do it in Dos as the file is based on DOS

So should I be using the command prompt and how could I use it?

You can use XP's command prompt to ediit DOS files.
At the command prompt, type edit [[drive:][path]filename].
The Alt key will give you access to the menus.

If you can't delete the file conventionally, using a command prompt in Windows won't do it either. It's best to reboot into Safe Mode (F8 at the WinXP "fade-in" screen) and delete there.

Often you can delete stuff from cmd prompt that explorer refuses to do.

It is usually true in corrupt movie files. Where explorer will get stuck trying to retrieve data from the file and claim the file is in use when you try to delete. In that situation you can delete from the command prompt to get around the problem.

I had a different problem with deleting folders on a particular partition the other day, I used the cmd prompt to get around that.

More back on topic. If you need more than the command prompt, there is a DOS emulator at dosbox.sf.net

An important thing to remember about the dos box in Windows 2000 and XP is that there is a 32 bit version and a 16 bit version.

When you run CMD.EXE you are running a 32-bit windows command line only. You can still run Windows utilities such as ping and tracert.

If you run COMMAND.COM, the CONFIG.NT and AUTOEXEC.NT files are processed to load 16 bit drivers. You will then receive errors when trying to run windows utilities such as ping and tracert.

If you don't have luck with CMD, try COMMAND. I use COMMAND to run all kinds of DOS applications and games. (If you try to run them under CMD, you will automaticlly be switched to the COMMAND VDM.)
