Windows Update scan stuck at 0%

I've got a Windows 98se machine that I've just cleaned a bunch of spyware off of. When I go to the Windows Update site and tell it to Scan for Updates it just sits at the screen saying it's looking, 0% complete.

There is one MS KB article on this subject concerning a utlity called Netsonic Interent Accelerator, but that has never been installed on this machine.

I've tried re-installing 98 and both Ad-Aware and SpyBot S&D report no more spyware.

Does anyone have any ideas of what else to try?

Is update set to run on startup? If not enable it and see how it works.

Ok, tried running it at startup, and got the same result.

Check in the windows folder recent for any update attempts that might be holding it back, might as well run diskcleanup on the drive to get rid of any other temp or internet files as well.

Lift All Update Restrictions by downloading and running this regfile. For Permission issues read this article.

To get the updates to re-appear and/or to be listed as available again. Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in ( or copy & paste ):
del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log. Then try again.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Rocketmech's first suggestion (the 5.6 scripting engine) did the trick. It's working now.

    Thanks again.
