usb data transfer help

Hi, I have a problem. I have two computers, one is a labtop and the other is a desktop. I need to transfer some files from my labtop to the desktop and they are too big for a floppy. I went out and bought one of those usb cables, but only one end was for a usb port. The other end was a weird type of usb, i think its called usb B. Anywayz, me being all creative and such, i bought an adapter that is supposed to extend the cable, and made it so the extention acted like a regular usb cable, so now I have a cable with two regular usb linkers on it. I have the two computers connected, but I don't know how to use or for that matter send files over it. Please help, without these files, I can't get onto the internet using my desktop, but thats a different story. Thanks for taking the time to read my distress message, please help quickly.

Unfortunately, what you need is a bit different than simply a USB cable with two "A" ends. You need a USB data transfer cable. You can think of the cable as having a "send" and a "receive" line. Right now, both computer are listening on one line and trying to talk on the other (at the same time). You need one where the lines are crossed over so one computer's send line is the others listen line. Make sense?

If you use that USB cable you have, you will be replacing one or both PCs. You NEED a specific USB transfer cable like this:

MidKnyte is absolutely correct. Since your laptop probably has an RJ-45 port, all you (maybe) need is a $15 network card for the PC and a $10 crossover cable.

Let me throw one more idea into the loop...

The owner of my company just simply couldn't grasp the idea of burning CDs...don't ask.
Hey...I said, don't ask...

Anyways...he was very fond of floppy, but...as you mentioned, huge size limits.


So...that being said...

We bought him a 256MB USB drive for about 50 bucks.

They act just as a Huge floppy drive or "extra" hard drive, very easy to use, and ultra portable. Much easier than burning a CD.

I do agree...though. If this is going to be a constant thing, transferring files from one PC to another, a couple network cards and a router would be the ideal ticket. However...if that makes you a little nervous...those pen USB drives are wonderful.

I bought one, and keep all my software utilities on it...spyware/adware removal tools, virus removal tools...etc.
