    Installing win98 correctly

    my system:
    BH6, 300A, 64mb, wd 8.4g HD, i740 AGP video, optiquest q71

i have been trying to load win98 from scratch without much luck.

It says these types of things:
Windows Protection Error (while initializing device IOS)

    file not found on source disk: secvr32.dll, svrapi.dll, ndiswmi.sys, vnetbios.vxd, isdnui.dll, isdn.hlp

    and then sometimes:
    fatal exception 00 has occured at 0028:c00403fs in vxd vfat(01) + 00008b25

    and:
Invalid VxD dynamic link call from DRVWPPQT(01) + 0002f0cf to device "0101", service 3C
    Configuration is invalid

Anyway, I have only been in safe mode. I have loaded it three times, the last time I took out the modem and soundcard to see if that would help but it hasn't really. Does anyone know what is going on? It says those files listed above can't be found on the CD on win98.

Any ideas would be really appreciated and thanks for your time.

    Hi
since you can boot to safe mode, try copying the win98 folder to your hd. Disable dma and set pio to 2 or 3 (hd spec in bios). Then try reloading w98 from a startup disk with cd access enabled. when windows looks for files point it to the win98 folder on your hd. sounds like your cd has bit the dust. try cleaning the cd drive too. good luck.

    Hi,
Is your CD bootable or do you have the upgrade version? If it is bootable and you have your CD-ROM drivers you could try loading it from a DOS prompt. Press F8 when your computer tells you that it is starting Windows 98 (the same way you get to safe mode) and select command prompt only. Once your in the prompt go to the letter of your CD drive and type setup. If your really desperate you could try formatting you drive and then trying the above again. Good luck!

This sounds like Deja Vu. I had to strip out everything but a serial mouse and the video card. I reset the bios to defaults and disabled com 2. That got it loaded and then I added my hardware back one piece at a time. Good Luck!
