Domain Name Registration
I'm looking to register a domain name very shortly, and have found quite a few different places offering the service. The prices seem to range from about $35 per name to under $10 per name.
By going with a cheaper registrar (?), what possible benefits could I be missing out on? I'm not looking for any hosting or site-building services, just simply to own a .com
Thanks in advance for any advice!

You will not really miss out on anything using a cheap registrar since you are not going to have a site hosted.
I paid a $25.00 fee for my name registration and first months service. I now pay $11.95 a month for my site to be hosted.
All the registrars send the information to the same database system. InterNIC controls names I believe. You can move your domain from registrar to registrar as you see fit for a fee.

this one looks good : www.1&1.com ; $5.95/y (no transfer fee), free domain parking...
