JTS Corp Champion hard drives

Just curious really. I've been given a 3.2Gb hard drive made by JTS Corporation. I see from the Web that the company appears to have just gone bankrupt. (I guess I can forget any warranty.)
I'd just like to know if anyone here has had any experience with these drives (failure rates, etc). I'd like an idea of what its lifespan is likely to be. The one I have has nearly 2Mb of bad sectors (already there when I was given it) but they don't seem to be increasing. Might be useful as a slave if I don't put anything important on it. It IS fast and it IS exceptionally quiet. Any comments on these drives would be much appreciated.

It's not the drive, David, the board is just slow lately. I have a 1.2GB JTS Champ in my daughter's computer (used to be mine)and it has been punsihed daily for three years without a glitch. I have fdisked, formatted,installed and removed operating systems, and now it is primarily a Windows game machine - never a problem. Now that I've said all that I hope it doesn't die tomorrow.

I have a 2.1 gig in an older system and it is still doing ok. I also have formatted 2-3 times without incident. But then I got it for $100(then it was a great deal).

Use it as a slve and u should be fine.

I have a 3.2 gig JTS Champion drive, Went bad after a year (will not spin up). Like you have mentioned they seem to have gone bankrupt.
I have been trying to return it..Guess I will
open it and hang it on the wall next to all the dead seagates I have.

Cheesh! I was getting to feel quite happy and confident until I read YOUR reply, Blade Runner. Why'd you have to be so honest?

Seriously though, thanks for the feedback guys. BTW, CMonster, if your daughter is anything like mine, your drive must have been through unadulterated hell; that's quite an endurance test!

In the meantime, I'll continue to use the JTS Champion as a slave and let you know if and when it dies. Maybe you'll send flowers?

I had a champ 2G for a year. Very slow but it ran ok. It is still running in a system I gave away...running about 2 years now.

Have been using a JTS 3.2 drive now for almost 2 years (as a slave). Have had absolutely no problems with it. (knock on wood). It outlasted the 6.4 gig Maxtor I had as a primary. Maybe there is something to be said for them. Hate to see they have gone belly-up, they always seemed to have reasonable prices on their drives..

Thanks guys! Getting a good, rounded picture of these drives now . . . and it seems that they are more or less as reliable as the drives by the big manufacturers. (Keeping my fingers crossed.)

Like you said AW, it's a shame JTS went bankrupt. Bang goes a good source of cheaper drives. [sigh!]
