Bad usb ports on K7S5A Pro
Hi,
Im running an ECS K7S5A Pro with a XP2000+ running at 1250mhz(I dont have DDR ram yet) running 256mbs of PC66 sdram, until recently my USB network adapters worked fine on the usb, but now, when i plug them in, it says unknown device, i've tried reformatting my harddrive with windows 98 AND windows 2000 pro in the hopes that it was a software issue, but i guess not. Think i have bad usb ports? I also plugged in a seperate usb card, and that works but it sometimes causes my machine to freeze.
Also, i ordered a Radeon 9200SE w/128mbs ram, and it worked in the aforementioned computer for about 3-4 weeks until i adjusted a setting in a game for higher resolution and now the video glitches and freezes the game, so i changed the setting back, but now the card will glitch if im doing any old thing on my comp, any ideas?
Also, i've been running this ram in this comp for about... a year now, and everything has worked fine.
Any ideas on either of the two above problems would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jrad

Sounds like you have a power problem there.

oh yeah, im using the same 250watt PS as a year ago(Yes i know, weak, but gets the job done).
It MIGHT be going out, but i sort of doubt it, could you be a bit more specific on "power problem"?
Thanks,
Jrad

Hail to the Victors
Spend 30 bucks or so, and get a quality 300W Fortron Unit...
It really pushes from 350 to 370Ws....
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...104-979&depa=0
it might "do the job" now...but, if it goes, it often takes any of these with it:
Mobo
CPU
RAM and/or
Vid card.
Also, download and test your memory with www.memtest86.com
PC 66 RAM is old, old old....so, it might be going bad...

Well, as always, if you overstress something (and you definitely do!), it won't live as long as it should. Change to an adequate PSU now, before it dies and drags other stuff down the drain.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't PC66 RAM massively underspec for an Athlon?
Update your BIOS if you haven't and run through this SiS USB troubleshooter:

yep, you're wrong bill.
It is seriously, massively underspec'd...
Between PC66 RAM, and that underpowered PSU...it's really a losing battle...

I had a similar problem with the usb showing as an unknown device in the device manager and not working. My cure was to delete the contents of the enumeration file in Win98 ao at the next boot, Windows would re-ID all devices and reload drivers. I believe I had to have all the necessary drivers/disks to do this including mobo, but it finally did work. I tried to search MS Knowledge base to find the reference page I used but for the life of me can't come up with it. You might try your own search string.

I was thinking of replacing my motherboard because of this problem, but if the suggestions work, i should just replace my ram and PS right? I was thinking Kingmax PC2100 or 3200 i was going to be pushing into OC'ing a little.
I'll try out those suggestions today.
Any links to a cheap, good(yes, i know those two dont necessarily go together) PS would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jrad
