Drives >8.4gig and Win95
What's the bottom line with trying to
partition a larger than 8.4gig drive
as one partition. Will fdisk let you
do it and then Win95 won't see
all of it? Does Maxtor's MaxBlast
software provide a way around it, and
does the overhead of this program cause
any problem?
If there isn't any performance degradation,
I would like to find a way to have one
partition. If there would be performance
loss, I'll just go with 8.4 & 5.2
partitions, if both those partitions can
even be seen. Any difference win Win98.

Hey, you only paid $100 for that drive, you don't DESERVE more than 8 GB. Seriously, if you have Win95 OSR2 or higher, you can use FAT32 partitions > 8GB, although your cluster size will go from 4k to 8k if you do (still not too bad). If you have original Win95 or OSR1, I don't think there is a way around the 8GB partition limit, but if you use 2 partitions, there is no problem seeing the entire 13GB.

Unless you have FAT32 (Win95 OSR2) do not install a hard drive with an 8 gig partition. You will loose an _incredible_ amount of space. Your options: Make numerous smaller partitions or buy Win98 which can convert your 8 gig partitioned drive to FAT32. I recomend the latter.

Thanks for the responses, guys. I've got
Win95 OSR2/FAT32, so I guess no problem.
You think It'll see the entire 13.6
without MaxBlast as 1 partition?

PS: I'm doing the drive for someone else,
so my scooping up the deal was someone else's
gain, not mine

Good luck on the drive.
I used to love having only one partition - but constant tinkering has led me to believe that having at least one other partition to keep important data on is a very good idea. That way when my experiments go terribly awry or Winblows gets so cluttered that I long for a "clean" install- it's "format C:" and "e:\setup"

I have a Maxtor 8.4 W-98 and I still have
only a total (5 partitions) of 7.8 G.
Also, "Partition-It" will not recognize
the drive.
Had a stuggle trying to get it going **without** using the MaxBlast formatting software.
Ideas about getting "Partion-It" to work?
